Description

Join private collector Bill Zewadski for a gallery talk about the 19th century photography on view in the exhibition “Ancient Athens: Birthplace of Democracy.”

Event Details

The black-and-white photographs bring life to the ancient city of Athens, its arts and ideals, as it laid the foundations of popular government. They exhibition helps contextualize the Museum’s permanent antiquities collection while recognizing the continued importance of the cultural legacy of Classical Greece.

Either on loan from the Zewadski collection or donated to the Tampa Museum of Art, the works represent some of the earliest and most important photographers active in Athens during the 19th century. The collector will talk about the beginnings of photography, still very much a new science and art form at the time. The selected photos illustrate various techniques and advances in that science, as much as they illustrate ancient art and monuments. Mr. Zewadski will additionally discuss his various collection interests.
