With a name like Gourmet Pizza Company, the stakes are immediately raised when it comes to the quality of pie you dole out to the masses on the daily basis. It's a risky name, but one this Hyde Park pizzeria has near-effortlessly lived up to since its inception back in 1999.
With numerous accolades from Best of the Bay and AOL's City's Best, not to mention the holy reverence with which this place is talked about in local foodie circles, Gourmet Pizza Company is a near-right in itself if you ever think you're going to talk about great pizza in Tampa with any shred of legitimacy.
Which is why a mid-day stop a Gourmet Pizza Company wasn't all too surprising, which is a weird compliment, but a compliment nonetheless.
Gourmet Pizza Company's menu comes lined with an assortment of creatively-minded and more traditional pizzas as well as salads, appetizers, and more.
The Steak Gorgonzola immediately beckons me from the menu. A rich assortment of center cut cut ribeye slices, fresh mushrooms, carmelized onions, and gorgonzola cheese atop a thin layer of mozzarella and red sauce.
The first bite awakens my palate like few other pies have. The pungent gorgonzola hits like a flavor packed bomb on the tongue then falls back to meld with the soft steak slices and sweet onions for a pizza eating experience that's, dare I say, near orgasmic.
Even the breadsticks at this place are miles beyond the rest. These pillow delights boast a deceptively crunchy exterior and warm, soft inner made all the more exciting by a house cheese blend topping, garlic herb butter, and parmesan cheese.
