Meatless Monday: Ella's Americana Folk Art Cafe
If you were zipping down Nebraska Avenue, you might miss it at first. But at night, the string bulbs draping outside their patio make it hard to miss. So does their menu.
Ella's Americana Folk Art Cafe caters to everybody, including our gluten-free friends. From their rasta-far fries to their creative cocktails (they make a vegan Key Lime Pie Margarita), this restaurant aims to offer a folksy, modern atmosphere with food that cannot be ignored.
Though omnivores and herbivores alike can dine here, we stuck with the meatless option as usual and tried "The Good Burger". The name underestimates this dish though; perhaps a more proper name is the "This-Is-Delicious-How-Is-It-Healthy-Burger".
The housemade veggie patty is topped sunflower shoots, curried mayo (or without if you make it vegan), avocado relish and crispy onion strings for a painless $11. For our side, we had to test out the rasta-far fries, which is chunky potato wedged fries coated in sriracha hot sauce, mustard and topped with cilantro. If you're looking for a lighter option, "The Roots" provides just that. The entree comes with a grilled sweet potato with grilled feta over parsnip puree and herb vinaigrette. You can make this vegan and gluten free, in addition to the side of a root vegetable chip and pecan salad, drizzled with a balsamic reduction. This dish rings up to an easy $13.
If you're really looking to extend your experience, head out to the patio and enjoy a classic cocktail or tea to end your meal. Make your Monday feel like a healthy Friday and check out this spot.
