Part of daily summer life in Tampa is dealing with the daily torrential downpour at 4 pm. Let’s face it – it’s inevitable that the rain is coming down this afternoon. It's also going to be humid, but sunny by 4:45 at the latest, so don't get too depressed about this.
And instead of being trapped somewhere without an umbrella, here’s a list of terrific places where you should be when it rains in Tampa.
In Bed
You don’t have to ask me twice! After all, 4 pm is prime naptime. Not tired? Log onto Netflix and treat yourself to a movie marathon (I heard HBO has the whole Harry Potter series). If you’re feeling cuddly, scoot over and make room for your pet who’s probably lost it from all the thunder.
Ikea near Ybor City
If you’ve ever been to IKEA, you know how easy it is to get lost in there. Why not use a rainy day to do it again? With an establishment so big, no one will know how long you’ve been wandering around and testing out the beds. Plus, IKEA has a Swedish-style café inside to fill up on after you’ve walked a couple miles around the place (get the Swedish meatballs – trust me). And don't forget the free coffee, just sign up for their loyalty card!
At The Movies
There are (way too) many movie theaters in Tampa to pick from when planning your rainy day screening. For a classic and reliable movie experience, always head to AMC West Shore 14 (they even brought back $5 ticket Tuesdays). If you’re looking for more of a cinematic experience, Studio Movie Grill, Villagio Cinemas, CineBistro, and Tampa Pitcher Show all offer luxury seating and full food and drink service to accompany the movie. MOSI features IMAX and IMAX 3D movies. If the rain gets you feeling... in the mood, take your partner to Tres Equis, an adult store, arcade, and theater!
Tropicana Field
Although the location of the Rays’ stadium is controversial, there’s no debate that the dome is a lifesaver. Enjoy America’s favorite pastime this summer and escape the rain with the Rays. Games are played all throughout the week at different times, plus you can get tickets the day of (and for cheap... you might even find a freebie that's about to be unused by someone at Ferg's Sports Bar or in the parking lot before the game).
Grab A Beer
You already know this is one of the best beer city's in America, so plan on getting rained in somewhere! Angry Chair Brewing in Seminole Heights is a good spot to stay dry while whetting your whistle, and don't miss places like the legendary Cigar City Brewing on Dale Mabry Blvd., 81Bay Brewing Company down by Gandy Blvd., or Coppertail Brewing Co. in Ybor City. Of course Tampa has as many breweries per capita as any city in America, so find one close and stay dry.

Grab A Book... In the Library
Spend some quality time with the bookshelves and peruse at your leisure. Charles J. Fending Public Library, Barnes and Noble, John F. Germany Public Library, and the Robert W. Saunders Library are all great spots to book browse. Jan Platt Library also has a great selection, and a room where every book inside is just $1! Oxford Exchange also has a library to roam, along with other shopping options and comfy chairs to kick back in – perfect for people watching.
Sam's Club
Just like IKEA, Sam’s Club is a maze you’ll love getting lost in. However, this adventure is accompanied by free samples and savings galore. Make sure to hit every station and – if you’re still hungry – the café for crazy cheap pizza and pretzels.
Take in a Museum
We've got plenty of them in Tampa, including stalwarts Florida Aquarium, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Tampa Bay History Center, and many more. If you want to keep the kids dry, there's two great spots in the Glazer Children's Museum and MOSI - Museum of Science & Industry. It's the family way to avoid a rainy day!
