Competing against Polk county and other Florida locations vying for the newest Amazon distribution center, Hillsborough County has recently added a number of incentives aimed to lure the online retail giant into South Shore Corporate Park in Ruskin.
If all goes the way Hillsborough County officials are hoping for, Ruskin could play home to a 1 million-square-foot Amazon distribution center and 375 new job opportunities, and a positive economic impact on the rapidly growing Southshore community.
On Wednesday, Hillsborough County commissioners to waive an estimated $913,680 worth of property taxes over seven years, or half the amount the project is expected to generate over the period starting in fiscal 2016 according to the Tampa Bay Business Journal.
This is the most recent incentive proposed by Hillsborough County following $225,000 in incentives the county will award Amazon, with the expectation of creating 375 jobs paying more than the state average of $47,581, the Journal reports.
The 1-million-square-foot, 70-acre building site in Southshore sits right along I-75 and, if chosen as the spot, will be developed by Ryan Cos. US. Inc.
According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, County Administrator Mike Merrill and Commissioner Sandra Murman said that a location announcement could come as early as the next day or two, and, at the latest, by the end of the month.
If Amazon comes to Southshore, it will join the recently announced new St. Joseph's Hospital branch set to be built in the area and bring an expected 500 jobs in Southshore when it opens.
