It’s a charming hotel as much in demand by convention organizers as society brides, but there’s something else the Tampa Waterside Marriott hotel is to Tampa: a good neighbor. The kind of friendly neighbor who always steps up to help out as it has numerous times in the past by playing host to fundraisers such as the Heart Gala, Best Buddies Champions Gala, JDRF Night of Hope and so much more,
Coming up is one of the hotel’s biggest events and a great cause with which all Tampa Bay residents can become involved: the Children’s Miracle Network Torch Relay 2.5 Mile Walk.
This event began in 2002 as a continuous relay that started in Miami and ended in Orlando. The following year, the event stretched to include northern Florida and Georgia. In 2005, it grew to be a coast-to-coast event. This year, the relay will begin in Indianapolis Sept. 9 and move through 19 cities before ending in Maui, Hawaii. Also, virtual participants will join in from all over the country.
Since 1983, the Children’s Miracle Network raised more than $5 billion to benefit a network of children’s hospitals in America and fill funding gaps. The Torch Relay alone (entirely organized and run by volunteers) raised more than $11 million since its inception, and this year, the Tampa event organizers hope to raise $40,000 for Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, our local Children’s Miracle Network designee.
