There is nothing more exciting during the year than to man or woman up a contraption created in a surely savvy garage that will be sent ‘flying’ off an over-sized diving board in Tampa. This flailing and flying day is known as none other than the famous 2011 Red Bull Flugtag event. On October 8th, locals of all ages and demographics will ban together and apply to be one of the, hopefully, successful Flugtag flights off the man-made pier built at the Tampa Convention Center.
Every year since 2008, the teams that have attempted this feat have become more and more creative hoping to spark more laughs and cheers from the crowd than actual success in the distance their creation travels. Months of preparation and creativity will be put into a team’s flying contraption. Their 15 minutes of fame is consolidated into a seemingly generous 10 seconds as they send their friends and paper machete sculptures off the Red Bull Pier and into the refreshing waters of Tampa Bay.
If flying off of a 30 foot pier into the water below is not your cup of tea for this summer activity, then delve into the massive crowds of onlookers that celebrate this event passionately. The 2010 Tampa Flugtag brought over 80,000 people who packed up all their friends and beach chairs to find the perfect spot on one of the many closed off streets. This is an all day event and the city encourages everyone attending to bring plenty of water and sun protection.
