Red Bull had another successful Red Bull Flugtag in Tampa, Florida. In 2008, the Tampa Red Bull Flugtag set a US record with an attendance of 110,000. The 2011 event topped that event with 125,000 fans packing into downtown Tampa and along Bayshore Blvd. Flights began at 1pm with 40 teams competing for best team based on distance flown, creativity of the aircraft, and showmanship on the stage along with the People's Choice Award which is based on fan votes via text messaging. You would think the best score you could get from the judges was a "10" but this year it appeared that the best judge score was "W T F O M G".
Other than increasing the attendance from the 2008 event, the teams from the 2011 Tampa Red Bull Flugtag were unable to beat the world Flugtag record for distance at 207 feet. In fact, many of the 40 teams did not fly far at all or just took a nose dive, but they definitely had fun doing it. The majority of the teams were from Florida, but there were teams representing from around the world like the Barry Potter and the Curse of the Deathly Shallows from the United Kingdom.
The Tampa Red Bull Flugtag results and award ceremony for the winners followed shortly after the last flight of the event. The team that took the grand prize was the returning 2008 champion with the team name Willy Wonka's Amazing Flying Adventure. By securing this win, the team set a US record by being the first team to win two consectutive Red Bull Flugtag's in the same city. The grand prize for the team is an all exclusive meet and greet with Red Bull Air Race world champion Kirby Chamblin at his "Flying Crown Ranch" in Arizona. Second place went to Adventure Team Bigstuff from Gainsville, FL with their "Back to the Flugtag" aircraft. The price for them is a team skydiving outing with the Red Bull Air Force. Third prize was won by the U.S.A. Team out of Pompano Beach, FL with their A-Team style aircraft. The prize for third place is a tandem paragliding experience for the team. The official distance of flight for the winners has not yet been recorded documented.
These winners above were all decided by the judges based on their performances while the People's Choice Award was voted on my the public through text voting. To win this award, it requires a lot of promoting as well as a good performance. The winner of this year's Red Bull Flugtag People's Choice Award is team Stumble Force with the Android aircraft from Tampa, FL. The prize for this award is a Red Bull Flugtag viewing party for the Stumble Force team and 20 of their friends at a local bar or restaurant.
