In 2015, the Straz Center launched a series of community art projects engaging people in the creative process and highlighting the extraordinary talents of local and international visual artists.
Event Details
As a result of the overwhelming response, we created Art on the Walk, an ongoing community art project permanently exhibited on the Riverwalk.
As part of Art on The Walk, an ongoing initiative to bring the arts to the Riverwalk, the Straz Center presents Veterans Art Exhibit: Reintegration and Resilience, Jan. 24 through March 15. This very special exhibit of local veteran artwork will coincide with the National Initiative for Arts & Health in the Military’s 4th National Summit: Reintegration & Resilience, held in Tampa on Feb. 2-5 on the University of South Florida campus in Tampa.
According to the exhibit curator Susan Saloom, military and veterans initiative specialist for the National Initiative for Arts & Health in the Military at Americans for the Arts, “the arts are a timely solution for those veterans who do not respond to traditional treatments and medication. There is an intersection of expressive arts and health, providing ongoing benefits for our military and veterans, their families, and caregivers, as well as for us all.”
Most of the artwork is from local veterans affiliated with local arts programming including the Veterans Creating for Community Program at the Beach Art Center in Indian Rocks and the Veterans Art Center Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg. Others come from VA recreational and creative arts therapy such as the local Bay Pines VA and the West Haven Connecticut VA’s “Giant Steps” program.
